Reading CAN be FUN!

Last week, the HMR Literacy Event took place at Roosevelt Elementary School; if you missed it, you’ll have to discover on your own just how fun reading can be!

More than 280 people took part in the Horace Mann-Roosevelt (HMR) Literacy Event in the evening on April 24, which was sponsored by Prairie Public Broadcasting through their Share a Story Literacy Grant, with support from the Horace Mann Area Neighborhood Association and the Roosevelt Neighborhood Association.

Event goers spent the evening doing family activities related to books and reading that included bookmark-making, book bingo, spending time in a beach-themed reading lounge, creating your own comic, selecting a give-away book,  Collecting information and door prizes, and listening to community storytellers such as Merrill Piepkorn (pictured to the left).Curious George and Man in yellow Hat wave to camera

The event highlight, however, was meeting Curious George (played by HMR Assistant Principal Megan Kiser) and the Man in the Yellow Hat (HMR Principal Kim Colwell), characters in the famous, early-reader Curious George book series by H.A. and Margret Rey.

Due to the event’s overwhelming attendance and fun-factor rating, plans are already underway to hold the family literacy event again in Spring 2015. Make your plans to get in on the reading fun!
