Most schools have an overflowing trophy case to visually showcase the achievements of its students and alumni. North High School, 801 North 17th Avenue, created an “artifacts” room to house its abundance of award plaques and trophies and Hall of Fame lists when it remodeled in 2003. That setup didn’t fit the tried-and-true trophy case model, though, so the room remained mostly unused for several years.
That artifacts room was eventually repurposed and turned into a rotating art gallery space. This “new” room was named the Mailloux Gallery and Museum (MGM), in honor of now retired North High Assistant Principal and Activities Coordinator Gary Mailloux. Mailloux began with the Fargo Public Schools in 1969 as a social studies instructor and coach. He became an assistant principal at North High in 1978 and retired from there in 2007, after 39 total years of service to the District. Mailloux is still active within the District as a coach for North’s boys cross country and track and field teams.
This room, complete with proper lighting, moveable wall panels, and display pedestals, is now in its sixth year as an art gallery. The MGM primarily features shows of artwork by Fargo Public Schools students and staff. Every May, senior art students at North High are invited to showcase their works in the space. Community artists and entities are also invited periodically to show in the space. Past artists or groups who have staged shows there include the MSUM Ceramics Guild; Fargo-Moorhead Visual Artists; Barbara Nagle, art instructor at Carl Ben Eielson Middle School; and Steve Knutson, art instructor at Discovery Middle School.
North art instructor Lisa Gingerich is the current gallery curator, and North High art students assist in both hanging shows and monitoring the gallery during open hours, providing a hands-on administrative aspect to the students’ creative art education.
Call for Artwork: Alumni of North High School are invited to submit a piece of their original artwork (any medium) for display this January in an All-Alumni Art Show in the Mailloux Gallery.
