Six teams of students in the Davies High School Culinary Academy class of instructor Lana Duffey Feeley have just finished an exciting part of their baking unit. The teams faced off Tuesday to see who could present the best cupcakes in a contest patterned after the hit show “Cupcake Wars,” on Food Network.
Teams were required to use a “secret” ingredient in their cupcake recipe, revealed to them during the baking phase of the contest, which took place in class on April 29. Those ingredients were the choice of potatoes, corn, flax seed or sunflower seed. As in the TV show, the contest was themed.
The theme for this year’s contest was the Red River, so presentations had to reflect that subject in some way.
Bacon cupcakes: one team used thick slices of the breakfast staple as their topping on-top.
On April 30, students decorated their cupcake presentations and plate them for a 4-person judging panel. The winning entry was turned in by the team of McKenzie Haverkamp, Carter Schulke, Grace Haggard and Anna Danielson, above, who created “sandbag” pillow-shape designs in their frosting with fondant and ground flax.
