South High’s production of Once Upon a Mattress opens tonight, Thursday, November 1st at 7:30 pm. The play, regarded as great family fare, is a comic rendition of the classic story of the Princess and the Pea. Its plot is based on the theme of not judging people based on their appearances. The tale tells the story of an overprotective queen mother who has declared that none may marry in her son’s kingdom until the prince has married, and the antics that ensue while the queen thwarts the efforts of every potential suitor.
Once Upon was originally performed off-Broadway in 1959. It was the Broadway debut of Carol Burnett, and played in revival on Broadway by Sarah Jessica Parker. South High’s production is directed by Steve Stark.
Ticket reservations are available by calling 446-2010 or coming to the box office prior to curtain. Performances continue at 7:30 on Friday and Saturday with a Sunday, November 4th matinee at 2:00 pm.
