Gusty winds carried those words from former U.S. Olympic Trials gymnast Robin Huebner and WDAY News anchor Dana Mogck into a sea of color – several hundred Discovery Middle School students – on Monday afternoon during the opening ceremonies of the school’s annual week-long Olympic Games.
The ceremonial event featured a parade of nations, musical numbers by the school’s band and chorus, featured speakers, and a traditional torch-passing relay around the school track, beginning with outgoing Superintendent Dr. Rick Buresh, traveling via student runners around the track, and ending with a handoff to incoming Superintendent Dr. Jeff Schatz.
Discovery Principal Dr. Linda Davis was the emcee of the afternoon event. Speakers included Huebner, Mogck, 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team member and former NHL star Dave Christian, Board member Kris Wallman, Drs. Buresh and Schatz, and Discovery student Shawna Pantzke.
On Monday evening, students and staff continued the celebration at their school with their 3rd Annual International Arts Night event.
