District begins fresh fruit and vegetable program

Today, October 3, the District began its Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for the school year. This year, due to an increased USDA grant, FPS will serve free fresh fruits and vegetables at twelve elementary schools: Centennial, Clara Barton, Hawthorne, Horace Mann, Jefferson, Kennedy, Lewis and Clark, Lincoln, Madison, McKinley, Roosevelt and Washington.

The produce will be prepared in Nutrition Services kitchens and served with the milk at milk break. Students will be served a variety of favorites and new products; serving sizes will vary.

The program will serve produce four days a week: Monday through Thursday.  It will run through the year until funding is depleted, currently estimated to be early May of 2012.
