“Project English,” an annual F-M Area Rotary Club project for adult English Language Learners at Carl Ben Eielson Middle School, is being featured on National Public Radio beginning today. The program, now in its second year, teaches English to CBEs ELL parents using the Rosetta Stone computer software under the guide of Rotarians and District staff.
Project English is based on Rotary Internationals commitment to literacy, and its local F-M chapters long-time partnership with CBEMS through the FPS Foundations Adopt-A-School program. Rotarians have been tutoring the schools ELL students with their homework and reading assignments for years, and more recently, have been assisting CBEs ELL parents with student registration each fall.
Project English meets weekly through May, and also includes social components throughout the year to help the volunteers and parents better form bonds and friendship. During cold weather, Rotarians also assist with transportation for the parents to attend the class.
