Carl Ben program featured on National Public Radio today

“Project English,” an annual F-M Area Rotary Club project for adult English Language Learners at Carl Ben Eielson Middle School, is being featured on National Public Radio beginning today. The program, now in its second year, teaches English to CBE’s ELL parents using the Rosetta Stone computer software under the guide of Rotarians and District staff.

Project English is based on Rotary International’s commitment to literacy, and its local F-M chapters’ long-time partnership with CBEMS through the FPS Foundation’s Adopt-A-School program. Rotarians have been tutoring the school’s ELL students with their homework and reading assignments for years, and more recently, have been assisting CBE’s ELL parents with student registration each fall.

Project English meets weekly through May, and also includes social components throughout the year to help the volunteers and parents better form bonds and friendship. During cold weather, Rotarians also assist with transportation for the parents to attend the class.
